Blackout!!!

or... one of the stranger days of my life

On August 14, 2003 the largest blackout affected the greater US eastern coast of the United States from as high up as Canada to Washington DC. I was at my apartment in Manhatten when the blackout occurred. The following are some of the more interesting pictures I took on this day.

5pm Broadway.
The streets were backed up for miles.

9pm Union Square.
A man dressed in a white suite and a reverand coller weilding a megaphone grabs everyone's attention by giving a bombastic speach recanting everything from sex to corporations to politics. He concludes this tirade by going into convultions and passing out on the ground to the sounds of a cheering crowd.

1 am East Village.
The only places that managed to be open that night were the odd places that owned a generator. Hungry east villagers and adventure seekers line up for over an hour at Gristes Hot Dogs.

2 am Tompkins Square Park
A wayword onlookers climb a fence to get a better view of ......

a gigantic bonfire. Hundreds gathered around a empty space and threw newspapers, wooden fences, crates and any flamable thing they could find to feed the inferno in the middle.

The shirtless masses convened around the fire with drums and fluted instruments and danced in a tribalistic urgancy. Some jumped above the fire. Others walked slowly through it.
